Frau sein in Marburg

Frau Sein in Marburg is a photographic project exploring the question of what it means to be a woman in contemporary society.

In 2022, Anna Scheidemann photographed and interviewed 100 women from Marburg and the surrounding region, aged 5 to 100 years. Each portrait is accompanied by reflections on identity, emotion and personal experience.

Together, these voices form a collective portrait of womanhood across generations  revealing how social roles, personal histories and the cultural environment shape the experience of being a woman.

The project culminated in a public exhibition at EPH Marburg, presenting the portraits of the participants, and the publication of a magazine featuring their stories and reflections.

Through the dialogue between image and narrative, Frau Sein in Marburg creates a space for reflection on identity, community and the many ways of being a woman today.
